Hoy, What’s going on?

"If and when a Scottish team was put together, I would be delighted to represent Scotland in the Olympic Games.”

So says triple gold medalist at the Beijing games Chris Hoy, so how did the Scotsman and all those bloggers who jumped on his supposed comments get it so wrong? He also makes clear that much more investment is needed in sports facilities.

And on he’s right, with the 2014 Commonwealth Games fast approaching I’m sure we’ll see an unparalleled level of finical support from the Scottish Government to the 17 sports chosen for 2014 (Athletics, Aquatics, Boxing, Badminton, Weightlifting, Lawn Bowls, Hockey (Men and Women), Rugby 7s (men), Squash, Netball (woman), Cycling, Shooting, Wrestling, Gymnastics, Judo, Table tennis and the Triathlon)

The SNP Government is providing 80% of the funding for the Commonwealth Games which will transform parts of Glasgow’s east end. There will be two new sporting venues the National Arena and a national velodrome there will also be an athletes' village leading to investment in new affordable housing. While Tollcross will become home to the National Swimming Centre with the addition of a second 50 metre pool. That’s over £280 million going into the Glasgow games and is a real sign of commitment to both the city and sport in Scotland.

It’s also important to ensure that the Games deliver more for Glasgow than two weeks of sport and that is why it is vital that Scotland receives a fair share of lottery funding to leave a legacy for the east end. Over £150 million of lottery money that should have come to Scotland is instead going into building the London Olympics. So it is only right that £150 million of lottery funding goes toward building a legacy for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and around Scotland.

I know that John Mason MP will be taking this message to London with him over the next few weeks to ensure that Glasgow east is as well supported as the east of London

It’s also worth noting that the UK Government are not spending one penny on the Glasgow games. Maybe that’s something the Scotsman should be reporting on.
